The DS version has a note feature built in, which sounds great, right? Only, instead of an actually useful feature like a stylus controlled scribble pad, we're given a typewriter. It's archaic and most of my Myst memories involve searching through scraps of paper for something I scribbled down earlier in the game. In fact, every new feature for the DS version is just a poor attempt at overcoming the game-killing shortcomings. There is a new magnifying glass feature that becomes essential to read any note or book, but when used on the overworld it just makes everything look pixelated. The compression and cropping has made it so that everything is hard to read. First off, you cannot see a darn thing on this island. Then I'd find the worst port of Myst possible, making an already boring game into a frustrating and eye-straining one. The most interesting screenshots we could find.īut for the sake of argument, let's say I did really want to play Myst again. The environments are pretty but they're also completely stationary. The puzzles, due to their lack of direction (or indication they're even puzzles) become a series of random clicks, hoping something happens. These gameplay mechanics were boring and outdated 14 years ago, and even the nostalgia of my first adventure game experience doesn't make Myst palatable. So now, looking back on Myst, it's hard to believe we let this game slide, and I for one refuse to let it slide again. Many people did not finish Myst, though, and did not ever attempt to again because it just wasn't that fun. We all played it, and everybody had "that friend" who had somehow beaten the game and could help you out on the puzzles. Over a decade ago, nearly every personal computer came packaged with Myst. It was used primarily to showcase the power of CD-ROM technology back in the day. It put the player in a large world full of puzzles and a healthy dash of mystery. It was one of the first point-and-click adventure games made specifically for CD-ROM format. If you've never played Myst, or (shudder) don't know what I'm talking about, let me break it down.
